Welcome to Port Blair

Port Blair (Port Blair) - a city on the island of South Andaman, the capital and the largest populated point of the Union Territory Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The population is 100 186 people in 2001.

On the south-eastern side of the island of South Andaman is the capital of Port Blair. From here you can make a trip through the archipelago: in the city there are a lot of hotels, banks, companies for organizing recreation and sports complexes.

Ebullient historical events occurred here in 1789, when Archibald Blair, owned by the British East India Company, was in search of a safe bay for the company's ships. The place he chose was named Port Blair. After 50 years, a correctional colony was formed here for the participants of the Sipaev revolt in 1857, and by 1864 the number of prisoners had increased from 773 to 3,000. The construction of the prison began in 1896, and soon it became a frightening symbol of colonial pacification. There were lone cameras, and the place was called Kalapani (Black Waters), which was a reminder of the ill-treatment of prisoners.
