Welcome to Mayabunder Island

Approximately two hours drive on the road to the north, sheltered on a long cape right at the tip of the island, surrounded by mangrove swamps, is Mayabunder, the starting point for travel to the remote northern Andaman Islands. The village, inhabited by part of the former Burmese tribe of Karen, whose ancestors were once brought here by the British as a cheap labor force for logging and transportation. Near the ledge of the hill in the place where it begins to descend to the pier, there is the Forest Museum / Center for Interpretation, which features a motley collection of turtle shells, snakes in a solution of formaldehyde, dead corals, and a skull of a crocodile.
